ABC Kids have created a new lullaby to help families transition to quiet time and bedtime.
Who is singing the lullaby?
This beautiful track was written and performed by Christine Anu and produced by DOBBY. The lullaby is connected to Christine’s childhood on Mabuyag Island in the Torres Strait (Zenadth Kes).
What is Piki Lullaby about?
Christine Anu’s Piki (Dream) Lullaby is a soothing bedtime lullaby that echoes the gentle ‘nai-guy’ (northern) breeze of Mabuyag Island - it feels aloft and warm and lulls the listener into beautiful dreams while ‘Athe’ (Grandfather) Moon and the stars watch from above.
Studio Gilay’s visual story is inspired by a recurring dream from Christine’s childhood of her soaring above Mabuyag Island on her Waku Mat. Inspired by Christine’s memories, our young hero ‘Yathana’ (Little One) will embark on a similar journey, soaring across Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) not only above the shimmering moonlit waters, but also exploring the curious depths below. Much like the intricate weave of the Waku, this story depicts the profound interconnectedness between our hero and the world around her. Showing how the fibres of the natural world are woven and connected with Torres Strait Islander people.
What language is the lullaby in?
Piki Lullaby includes the Kalaw Kawaw Ya/ Kala Lagaw Ya language from Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait).
Who created the artwork?
The animation was created by Studio Gilay, a production company made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, writers, producers, directors and animators – working collectively to bring beautiful visuals and meaningful stories to screen.
What land was the lullaby created on?
Piki Lullaby was created on the lands of the Darumbal and Gadigal people.
What are the lyrics?
Christine Anu & Dobby - Piki (Dream) Lullaby
Oooo, Pur-ka thamu-dhar (Close your eyes)
Oooo, Uth-uy, Ay-a (let sleep come)
Oooo, Thi-thuy-il kay-mil gim-al (The stars above are your guardians)
Piki mangiz, Kapu piki (It’s time to dream, beautiful dreams)
Magic hour, golden light
Nay-gay (Northern) breeze whispers goodnight
Close your eyes, and not a peep
Athe (Grandfather) moon is watching you sleep
Oooo, Pur-ka thamu-dhar (Close your eyes)
Oooo, Uth-uy, Ay-a (let sleep come)
Oooo, Thi-thuy-il kay-mil gim-al (The stars above are your guardians)
Piki mangiz, Kapu piki (It’s time to dream, beautiful dreams)
