We've cracked into a brand new era from G Flip with their fresh single, 'Disco Cowgirl'. G caught up with Abby & Tyrone on Drive to chat about what we can expect from them this year, what inspired their new music and how they prepare to perform it live.
Now mostly based in Los Angeles, G Flip said they've found a love for a local queer linedancing night, an influence that's pretty clear in 'Disco Cowgirl'.
"Queer linedancing nights is hot and so much fun," G said.
"Definitely some inspo. I've been working on new music and definitely gained a bit of inspo from that."
So if this first single was inspired by kicking their boots up in the club, what does the rest of this new era look like? Tyrone asked for a moodboard pitch, which G ran through without a shred of hesitation.
"Let's go denim, muscle cars, a lot of 80s textures," they said.
"Tape cassettes, maybe some saxophone, drum solos, synths, high energy, lots of colour, that kind of vibe. But still some dark-coloured themes, some neon lights and moody night time vibes. That's my pitch for my moodboard."
When it comes to new music, the big test is how it sounds live. G Flip admitted that because they're not classically trained as a singer, they kind of wrote a lot of their music without thinking about needing to actually sing it themselves.
"I'm not a trained singer so I don't really know what I'm doing when I'm writing," they said.
"So I write a lot of music without taking a breath, or thinking about breathing. And then I go to perform it and I'm like 'oh wow I really didn't think about having my breath control and breathing'."
But because they're a pretty active performer, they've got a couple of less-than-conventional tricks for training to perform live.
"I run on the treadmill and sing, I skip and sing, and I actually stand on my head and sing," they said.
"For me, when I'm singing and playing drums while my four limbs are moving, my whole core has to stay incredibly still for the microphone. So my core has to be so strong and doing a headstand is like really good for core strength and balance in your core.
"So I do a lot of headstands. It's weird."
