Perth Outer Northern Suburbs
Marginal Liberal 0.9%
MP
Ian Goodenough since 2013. Goodenough was defeated for Liberal pre-election last year and is contesting the 2025 election as an Independent.
Profile
Moore covers 102 square kilometres of Perth's northern beachside suburbs running from Trigg to Iluka and Joondalup, lying generally west of the Mitchell Freeway and Lake Joondalup. It includes the suburbs of Carine, Marmion, Sorrento, Duncraig, Padbury, Hillarys, Kingsley, Woodvale, Craigie, Ocean Reef and Currambine.
Redistribution
Minor changes move the seat south, losing Burns Beach and Kinross in the north to Pearce while gaining Karrinyup and Gwelup from Curtin in the south. The changes nudge the underlying Liberal margin up from 0.7% to 0.9%.
Background
Created in 1949, Moore is named after George Moore, Western Australia's first Advocate-General. Originally a rural electorate, Moore has contracted into Perth's northern suburbs over the decades and has been an entirely urban seat since 1990. Former members for Moore include Liberal John Hyde (1974-83), Labor's Allan Blanchard (1983-90), and Liberal turned Independent Paul Filing (1990-98).
Before the 1996 election, Filing became a victim of the WA Liberal Party's factionalism, losing pre-selection and resigning from the party. He contested his seat in 1996 as an Independent, re-elected after pushing the Liberal Party into third place. Like fellow independent Allan Rocher in Curtin, he fell at the hurdle of the 1998 election, the contest against the new Liberal candidate much harder without the publicity of Liberal factionalism.
New Liberal MP and former GP Dr Mal Washer, easily retained Moore until retiring at the 2013 election. Washer displayed an independent streak on several occasions, in particular on access to the morning after drug RU486, and issues concerning whether parents should have access to the medical records of their teenage children.
Moore was succeeded by current MP Ian Goodenough. He will re-contest election in 2025 after being defeated for Liberal pre-selection by Vince Connelly, whose neighbouring seat of Stirling was abolished in a redistribution before the 2022 election.
